Local Hospital Receives Honors for High Donation Rates

TAMPA BAY/HUDSON, Fla – (January 2, 2016) - Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point (RMCBP) was among 23 west Florida hospitals recently recognized for their efforts to educate hospital staff and their local community about the importance of organ donation through the United States Department of Health and Human Services "Workplace Partnership for Life" initiative. Together with LifeLink of Florida, RMCBP’s federally designated organ recovery organization, the hospital presented the importance of organ donation throughout the national campaign, conducted May 2014 – April 2015, by hosting various activities to increase donor registrations on Florida’s organ and tissue donor registry among both employees and hospital patrons.

Participating hospitals were evaluated on a points system for their activities promoting donation, with those achieving 1,000 points or more earning a platinum medal designation, 750 or more points earning a gold medal designation, 350 a silver medal designation and 200, a bronze medal designation. Points were earned in vary quantities for things such as providing presentations about donation to staff or the public, displaying donation related information in public areas of the hospital or promoting donation through the hospital website. Through a variety of donation education events and initiatives, Bayonet Point earned enough points to be awarded a gold medal.

Lead by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Workplace Partnership for Life’s Medal of Honor program is based on the premise of implementing, maintaining, achieving and sustaining national goals for donation, including improved donation rates, increased number of organs transplanted per individual donor and expanded clinical process for organ recovery. The Workplace Partnership for Life program is focused on a year-round approach to creating a Donate Life culture within all workplace partners, in hopes of increasing the number or registered organ and tissue donors – and ultimately the number of lives saved.

LifeLink of Florida is the non-profit community service organization that coordinates organ and tissue donation in West Central Florida.  There are currently more than 5,500 patients listed for life-saving heart, liver, lung, pancreas, or kidney transplants in Florida.  To save lives as an organ and tissue donor, register today at www.DonateLifeFlorida.org.
