Jefferson County Tax Commissioner Helps Save Lives.

Louisville, GA – (September 22, 2016) – Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at 12:00 p.m., Jefferson County Rotary and members of the public will learn why the gift of life through organ and tissue donation is important, thanks to a presentation from LifeLink® of Georgia representative, Cynthia Jenkins. Nancy McGraw, Tax Commissioner of Jefferson County, realized the community would benefit from this information when, as one of 500 state-wide tax officials who attended the May 2016 Georgia Association of Tax Officials (GATO) Conference in Athens, she was introduced to the topic herself.  Tax Commissioner McGraw’s realization that more than 5,500 Georgians await a life-saving organ transplant prompted her to invite LifeLink to share the donation message locally and register new organ and tissue donors.

More than 122,000 children and adults await life-saving transplants in the United States, including those in Georgia.  LifeLink is a nonprofit community service organization dedicated to the recovery of life saving and life enhancing organs and tissue for transplantation.  Right now, 99% of Georgians who say yes to donation do so at the Department of Driver Services when getting or renewing their driver license or state identification card.   Additionally, information about how to become an organ/tissue donor can also be found at certain Tax Commissioner Offices including Jefferson County’s Tax Commissioner Office. “We are very grateful that Tax Commissioner McGraw is leading the way to make residents of her County aware about organ and tissue donation,” says Kathleen Lilly, executive director of LifeLink of Georgia.

A single organ and tissue donor can touch the lives of up to 60 people. Almost everyone can donate to help others, regardless of age or past medical history.    Additionally, all major religions support donation as an act of charity.  To become an organ donor visit www.donatelifegeorgia.org or indicate that decision on your driver license or identification card.
