Approximately 192 local hospitals throughout the LifeLink of Florida, LifeLink of Georgia and LifeLink of Puerto Rico service areas earned national recognition for increasing organ, eye, and tissue donor registrations through the Workplace Partnership for Life (WPFL) Hospital Organ Donation Campaign. The WPFL Hospital Organ Donation Campaign is a branch of the broader Workplace Partnership for Life initiative that unites the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and the organ donation community with workplaces across the nation in spreading the word about the importance of donation.
The WPFL Hospital Organ Donation Campaign challenges hospitals and health care organizations to “let life bloom” by educating their staff, patients, visitors, and communities about the critical need for organ, eye, and tissue donation, and to offer opportunities to register as organ donors. LifeLink recruited and partnered with hospitals between October 2021 and April 2022 to plan and conduct organ donation education and donor registration activities. Across each service area, 103 hospital partners received Platinum level recognition, 48 Silver, 33 Gold and 8 Bronze from HRSA, as they continued to navigate and respond to the changes and challenges of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic within their communities.
Across the U.S., the 2022 Hospital Campaign efforts added 50,850 registrations to state registries, including registrations from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This campaign has generated over 630,000 registrations since its inception in 2011 and unites donation advocates at hospitals with representatives from their local organ recovery organizations.
In the United States, 105,000 individuals are waiting for a lifesaving transplant today. More than 5,200 of those people live in the state of Florida, 3,600 in Georgia and 300 in Puerto Rico. Unfortunately, every day in the United States 17 people pass away because an organ was not available in time to save their lives, and every nine minutes, another person is added to the national organ transplant waiting list. This ongoing need reaffirms the critical and growing need for more registered organ, eye, and tissue donors.
