Happy National Girl Scout Day

Girl Scouts across the country show a commitment to make the world a better place every day. The Donate Life organ donation patch, available through the LifeLink Foundation, provides an opportunity for Girl Scouts to learn how lives are saved through organ, eye and tissue donation and encourages participants to promote donation to help create a lasting impact in their communities.

Christina Merchant, Liver Recipient & Girl Scout

Diagnosed at four months of age with biliary atresia, a childhood disease of the liver, Christina was a very sick baby. A partial liver transplant at the age of seven months allowed Christina to thrive - her motor skills improved and her activity level increased. However, at the age of four, Christina’s health declined and after spending months in the hospital and on the national organ transplant waiting list, she received a full liver transplant.

How can a girl scout “Do a good turn daily” and help save lives?

In honor of National Girl Scout Day, now is a great time for girl scouts to complete the LifeLink Donate Life: Donation Awareness Patch Program. To date, 87 girl scouts from all levels and ages, have completed the program and received a free patch. Girl scouts who complete the patch program contribute to the world in meaningful ways and show concern and compassion for others.

In Florida there are more than 4,800 people currently waiting for a lifesaving transplant. One donor has the potential to save eight lives through organ donation and enhance the lives of up to 75 people through tissue donation. Anyone, regardless of their age or medical condition, can register as a donor online through the state donor registry, Donate Life Florida.
